Withlacoochee Forest Trail Marathon
The event offers three trail distances through the Two Mile Prairie Tract in Withlacoochee State Forest, near Lecanto, FL. Courses run entirely on unpaved hiking and equestrian trails through sandhills, oak forest, and wet prairies. The marathon is two 13.1 mile loops, the half marathon is one 13.1 mile loop, and the 10K is a modified loop. This is not a certified course. Expect sand, roots, varied terrain, and possible wildlife and insects.
There are three fully stocked aid stations spaced at roughly five mile intervals offering water, electrolyte sports drink, soda, pickle juice, chips, fruit, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Because of the distance between aid stations, all participants must carry personal hydration such as a handheld bottle, waist pack, or hydration vest or pack. All finishers receive a finisher award; the top three male and female finishers in each distance receive a handcrafted award. Primitive camping is available in the equestrian campground at Bear Head Hammock Recreational Area with tent, car, and RV boondock options; no water or power hookups are provided and the campground is reserved for race participants. Several motels and inns are listed within about 8 to 17 miles of the venue. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
