Mike Briggs Wirksworth Incline Race
The event is a short fell race that runs from Ravenstor Road below the National Stone Centre in Wirksworth and goes straight up to a trig point before returning to the finish. There are separate courses for older runners and for children.
- Main course: 6.9 km
- Short course: 3.2 km for 11 to 14 year olds
- Junior races: 1 km for 6 to 10 year olds, 3.2 km for 11 to 14 year olds
The main course starts on flat tarmac at about 80 metres above sea level and quickly reaches gravel and the High Peak Trail. Runners climb the historic incline, an official 77 metre ascent over about 636 metres at roughly 12 percent, and continue across fields to a trig point at about 358 metres. The return is largely downhill over trails, stiles and gates, with a final short tarmac finish.
Entry rules distinguish the courses. The long race requires pre-entry and carries a fee of £6.50. No substitutions or refunds are allowed and no entries on the day are accepted for the main race. Registrations for 11 to 14 year olds are accepted on the day for the short course and require a parent or guardian to sign a consent form. The main race is held under Fell Runners Association rules and the event supports local good causes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
