Wings for Life World Run - Boston
The Wings for Life World Run is a global sporting event held in Boston that accommodates both runners and wheelchair participants. The competition uses a unique format without a traditional stationary finish line. Instead, athletes run or roll as far as they can before being overtaken by the Virtual Catcher Car through a specialized mobile application.
The event takes place at Castle Island in South Boston. The route consists of a 2 mile loop featuring paved, flat pathways that circle the park and Pleasure Bay. Because of the level surface and infrastructure, the entire course is accessible for wheelchair participants.
The race follows a specific speed schedule. The Virtual Catcher Car begins its pursuit 30 minutes after the initial start at a speed of 14 km/h. It then steadily increases its pace at set intervals until every participant has been caught, marking the end of their individual race.
As part of a global charitable initiative, 100% of the entry fees and donations are allocated to spinal cord research projects. Participants use the Wings for Life World Run App to track their progress, receive timing data, and manage their race number. The local set up in Boston includes a refreshment station for those taking part in the run. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
