Event Overview
The Wingman Foundation Coastal Carolina Memorial 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run is an annual event held to remember service members lost in Navy and Marine Corps aviation mishaps. The 2026 edition is specifically in memory of the crew of Yanky 72, which included a Marine Corps KC-130 aircrew and Marine Special Operations personnel.
The event supports The Wingman Foundation, an organization that provides assistance to affected service members and their families following aviation mishaps.
Location and Course
The event takes place at Union Point Park in New Bern, North Carolina. The course is described as mostly flat, using cobblestone and roads as the primary surface. It begins at the park, winds along the river to the north around the National Cemetery, and returns to the start. The event is noted as being stroller, wheelchair, and dog friendly.
Events and Awards
Participants can choose from the following events:
- 5K - A timed race.
- 1 Mile - An untimed fun run.
- Virtual Run - An option to participate from any location.
Awards are given to the top three male and top three female finishers in the 5K, and to the top three kids overall in the 1 Mile fun run. All finishers in both the 5K and 1 Mile events receive a medal.

Participants who register by March 10, 2026, are guaranteed a race shirt in their preferred size. Parking is available at Union Point Park and in nearby downtown areas, including curbside spots and lots near the convention center and hotel.
