Wicklow Way Half

The Wicklow Way Half is a mountain running event held in County Wicklow. The course covers a distance of 22 km with a total ascent of 840 meters. The route begins at Lough Tay (Pier Gates) and follows the established Wicklow Way marked trail to the barrier at Crone Woods before returning along the same path.

The event follows a fully marked route, and participants are expected to follow the yellow walking man symbols and arrows. There is a cut-off time of 2 hours to reach the half-way point at Crone Woods. The terrain is categorized as easy mountain terrain, but the race requires a specific level of preparation.

Participants must carry mandatory Level B safety equipment, which includes:

  • A waterproof jacket
  • A hat or buff
  • Gloves
  • A whistle
  • A charged mobile phone with the emergency number stored
  • A foil blanket or bivvy bag

This race serves as a trial for the Trail de Guerledan in France, providing a development opportunity for senior athletes. While hiking poles are permitted, they cannot be used during the first kilometer of the race and must be stowed safely when not in use. The event operates a no-cup policy, so runners must provide their own bottles or cups for water refills at the turn-around point. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking at the Pier Gates location. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
