Whangamatā Adventure Race
The Whangamatā Adventure Race is a multisport event in Whangamatā, New Zealand, combining mountain biking, trekking, navigation with map and compass, and on-the-day mystery activities. Maps are provided and GPS is not allowed; maps are generally 1:25000 topographical style.
Mountain biking takes place on forestry roads, gravel roads and farmland, with steep hills in places. Trekking uses a mix of trails, stream crossings, native bush and forestry. Mystery activities vary and have previously included puzzle tasks, MTB balance challenges, mud running, paint ball shooting, word games and quoits.
There are two main race durations and typical movement demands:
- 3 hour event : jog/walk about 5 km off road and mountain bike about 10 km (longer if optional checkpoints taken).
- 6 hour event : jog/walk about 10 km off road and mountain bike about 25 km (longer if optional checkpoints taken).
Teams may consist of 2, 3 or 4 people. School teams are separated into Junior (year 9–10) and Senior (year 11–13) categories. The event is unsupported: teams complete transitions themselves and external support crews are not allowed. Start and finish are at the same location and there may be gear drops on race morning. Prizes include spot-draw items from event sponsors. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
