Weald Challenge : trail half marathon in Sussex
The Weald Challenge is a trail half marathon held in June from Chiddingly, East Sussex. The route follows the Wealdway outward and returns on the Vanguard Way. The course has been extended to about 22.2 km, roughly 1.1 km more than a standard half marathon, and includes a road total of 2.8 miles with short village lane sections and one longer 1.2 mile stretch on the Vanguard Way.
The route is mostly off road on public footpaths and bridleways. Runners should expect uneven ground, possible mud depending on weather, steps and 16 stiles, and passages through fields where livestock may be present. The route is marked by red and white arrows and includes two checkpoints: Newplace Park at 5.6 miles (9 km) and Scallow Bridge at 10.2 miles (16.1 km). Water, bananas and oranges are provided at the two checkpoints and at the finish.
The event is organised by Uckfield Runners (taking over from the previous operator in 2024) and is held under England Athletics rules with a Trail Running Association permit. The event is chip timed with start waves; results and awards are based on chip time. There is a five hour time limit.
Entries are limited to 400. Entries for 2027 open 1 October 2026. The minimum age is 17 years on race day. There are no refunds; deferrals and name transfers are permitted up to 5 May 2027.
Finishers receive a bespoke medal and a handmade event coffee mug unless they choose the Meals Not Medals option, which donates £4 to Uckfield Foodbank in place of a medal. Additional provisions include free car parking near the start, first aid cover, complimentary hot and cold drinks and cake after the race, free downloadable photos, and prize awards for overall and age category positions.
