About the race
The Vero Beach Octopus Ultra is an out and back ultra event organized by Mule Racing on the grounds of the Environmental Learning Center in Vero Beach, FL. The course uses a central base with eight out and back "Octo-Arms." Completing different combinations of arms yields different distances and finishing all eight within 32 hours qualifies a runner for the event buckle.
Distances offered include:
- 100 Miler
- 100K
- 50 Miler
- 50K
- Ultra Teaser (arm 1, 16.86 miles)
- Mini Ultra (29.4 miles)
The event traces its origins to 2020 when the first running covered eight out and back laps for 100 miles. A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to the Environmental Learning Center. TrailToes and LMNT are listed sponsors.
Course policies include a 32 hour overall cutoff for distances. There is a specific checkpoint requirement on arm 2 at the kayak launch that requires runners to reach the island by 2:00pm. Organizers reserve the right to remove participants for health concerns. Leaving the course for any reason results in a DNF.
Crew is not mandatory but is strongly recommended, and the organizers note there are long sections with no water access. A 2027 race guide will be sent closer to race day. Registration closes July 8 at 11:59pm ET. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
