Event

Black Wolf Backyard Ultra takes place July 11, 2026 in Palmer, Alaska, at Government Peak Recreation Area near Hatcher Pass. The race follows the Backyard Ultra format and is capped at 75 participants. Registration opens January 1, 2026. Organizers do not offer refunds, deferrals, bib exchanges, or race transfers. Shirt sizes are guaranteed to registrants who sign up by June 7.

Course

The loop is 4.167 miles (6706 meters) on single track and ski trails. Runners can expect moderate elevation changes of about 500 ft per loop. Trails will be clear and well marked, but there can be thick vegetation near the route and one small creek crossing with stepping stones. Runners should be prepared for rain, mud, and possibly wet shoes or socks.

Format and rules

The event follows standard Backyard Ultra rules. Runners complete repeated loops at fixed hourly intervals; each loop must be finished within the allowed time to count. Day and night loops use the same course. Late-night visibility can be reduced, so headlamps are recommended for overnight running. No crewing or outside aid is allowed during a loop. Water and a limited supply of prepackaged food will be available at the start/finish area. Artificial aids such as trekking poles are not permitted. The winner is the last person to complete a loop; all other runners are classified as DNF. Completing at least 24 loops makes a runner eligible for the at-large list for Big’s Backyard championship. The race is a bronze ticket event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
