Black Wolf Backyard Ultra

Black Wolf Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra held at Government Peak Recreation Area near Hatcher Pass in Palmer, AK. The course is a loop of 4.167 mile (6706 meter) over single track and ski trails with moderate elevation gain and loss of about 500 feet per loop. Day and night loops use the same route.

The event follows standard Backyard Ultra rules: each loop starts precisely on the hour and must be completed within the hour to count; the last person to complete a loop is the winner while all others are recorded as DNF. No crewing or outside aid is allowed during a loop, artificial aids such as trekking poles are not permitted, and runners are responsible for their own nutrition and gear. Water and a limited supply of prepackaged food are available at the start/finish area. Headlamps are recommended for the hours around midnight.

Trails will be clear and marked, but vegetation can be thick and wildlife may be present; participants are advised to consider carrying bear deterrent such as spray or a whistle. There is one small creek crossing with stepping stones and runners should anticipate possible wet shoes or mud. Registration opens January 1, 2026 at 6:00 AM and the field is capped at 75 entrants.
