50 Years of the Vail HillClimb
The Vail HillClimb is a historic trail running event that follows a route established in 1976. The course covers 12.2 km (7.6 miles) and features a significant ascent from Vail Village to Mid-Vail. Participants travel along a path that primarily consists of dirt and gravel service roads, with approximately 20% of the route on paved surfaces.
The course involves a total elevation gain of 2,128 feet, reaching a high point of 10,254 feet above sea level. The maximum grade encountered during the climb is 13.5%. The race begins near Vail's Mountain Haus and follows a series of roads and mountain paths, including Vail Valley Drive, Mill Creek service road, and Gitalong Road, before traversing across Vail Mountain to the finish line at Mid-Vail.
There are three aid stations along the route providing hydration:
- Mile 2.1 - Mill Creek / Gittalong Road split
- Mile 3.8 - Bottom of Avanti Lift
- Mile 5.9 - Below Eagle's Nest
This event is a papercup-less race, and participants are encouraged to bring their own hydration devices or reusable cups. Spectators can access the finish area via Gondola One, provided they board during specific early morning windows. No dogs are permitted on the gondola. Following the event, prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in various age categories from 19 and under to 70 and over. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
