Event Overview
The Union Half Marathon and Relay returns for its ninth annual edition in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. This athletic event serves as a fundraiser supporting the Union High School Cross Country program and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The race is professionally managed and features electronic timing for all participants. The course is USATF certified and is a recognized member of the State of Franklin Track Club (SFTC) Long Distance Series.
Distances and Course
Participants have the option to complete the full distance individually or as part of a relay team. The following formats are available:
- Half Marathon (21.1 km)
- Half Marathon Relay
The route begins at the Visitor Center in Big Stone Gap. Runners follow the paved Greenbelt Trail before transitioning to the Powell River Trail in Appalachia, Virginia. A notable feature of the course includes two historic train tunnels located along the Powell River Trail.
Logistics and Participation
Registration options are available for both in-person and virtual participation at the same fee. In the event that the live race cannot take place, all registered runners are transitioned to the virtual category. Each participant who completes the course receives a race t-shirt and a finisher's medal. The event does not offer refunds for registration fees.
