About the race
The Ultraman World Championships is a three day, multi-sport championship held on the Big Island of Hawaii. The event covers a total of 320 miles (515 km) and fields 40 athletes in a staged endurance format. The course distances reflect the size of the Big Island and are divided across swim, bike, and run disciplines.
- 6.2 mile open ocean swim
- 261.4 mile bike ride
- 52.4 mile ultra-marathon run
The first Ultraman event took place in 1983 on Hawaii Island. The race emphasizes principles of Hawaiian culture expressed as aloha, ohana, and kokua. Management of the event changed in 2017 and the championship continues to be organized as a multi-day race without prize money as a guiding principle of its history.
Qualifying events have been held in other locations and several regional Ultraman events serve as official qualifiers for the World Championships, with additional official qualifiers added over time. Annual results are maintained for each edition of the championship and course information is published for the staged days of competition.
