Turkey Toss 4 Miler Road Run
The Turkey Toss 4 Miler Road Run is an autumn running event held at Hawthorne Park in Porter, Indiana. The course follows a 4 mile distance, designed as a 2 mile out-and-back route. Participants run on a combination of pavement and bike trails. The path is clearly marked with flags and directional arrow signs at major turns to guide runners through the park grounds.
The event utilizes traditional timing methods. Upon crossing the finish line, participants receive a popsicle stick indicating their finishing order, which must be returned to officials inside the park facility. The community center serves as the central hub for the event, hosting packet pick-up and race-day registration. It also provides a heated space for participants to gather, as the event takes place in cold seasonal conditions.
Attendees have access to several amenities and activities:
- 4 mile run: A road and trail race starting and ending at Hawthorne Park.
Post-race refreshments provided in the community center include water, Gatorade, coffee, and snacks. Facilities such as bathrooms are also available on-site. Every participant receives a turkey hat as part of their registration. A unique "Turkey Bowling" activity is held inside the community center after the run, where raffle winners use a frozen turkey to knock down bowling pins for prizes. Additionally, various merchandise is often available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Porter Parks Department. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
