Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk - The Triangle, NC
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk in Raleigh is a community event that honors first responders and remembers the September 11, 2001 attacks. The series was created to commemorate a New York City firefighter who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers and lost his life on that day. This edition marks the 14th year of the event in the Triangle.
The event is a 5K (3.1 miles) open to runners and walkers. Registration categories listed include adult, first responders and military, youth (13 to 17 years), and children 12 and under, each with a specified registration fee. Day-of registration is available starting at 7:00 am and packet pickup is held in the school cafeteria at Forest Pines Elementary School, 11455 Forest Pines Drive, Raleigh; an evening packet pickup occurs the day before the event.
Organizers require participants to display their bib on the front of the outermost garment. Strollers and wheelchairs are permitted, and firefighter turnout gear and military backpacks are allowed for those who choose to wear them. Water is provided on course and at the start/finish area. Awards emphasize participants who run in gear consistent with the event’s commemorative purpose.
Additional logistics noted include on-site emergency medical services with radio communication, the ability to transfer registration to another participant, no refunds, and that registration fees do not count toward fundraising totals. Donations are accepted for six weeks after the event and fundraising incentives apply with a qualification deadline of November 1, 2026.
