Trystan's Backyard Ultra
Trystan's Backyard Ultra is an endurance event held at La Riviere Park in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The competition follows a traditional backyard ultra format where participants complete a 4.167-mile loop every hour, on the hour. The event continues until only one runner remains to complete a solo loop within the time limit.
The course primarily consists of singletrack trail winding through woods and natural terrain. The landscape features mixed surfaces including grass, dirt, and light gravel, with approximately 200-350 feet of elevation gain per loop. Participants are required to be in the starting corral before the bell rings each hour; failure to start a new loop on time results in disqualification.
Two participation options are available:
- The Backyard Ultra: An open-ended endurance race for those aiming to complete as many laps as possible.
- 1-Lap Family Fun Run/Walk: A single-loop event on the official course without a time limit, open to all ages.
The event site includes a central corral for starting and finishing each lap, where basic aid consisting of water, electrolytes, and snacks is provided. Participants are permitted to set up a 3x3 meter personal space for rest and fueling between loops. For those running after dark, a headlamp or restorative lighting is mandatory. All proceeds from the 2026 event are donated to local charitable causes, including Hamann’s Helping Hands and paralysis research.
Free parking is located on-site near the start and finish area. Participants receive a race shirt and a finisher's medal, while the last runner standing is awarded a cash prize. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
