Event Overview
The Trails & Tarmac 12 hour Backyard Ultra is a distance-based endurance event held in the Black Mountains near Crickhowell. The course consists of a 4.2 mile loop that features a mix of 50% trail and 50% tarmac. The terrain is relatively flat with only one gradual climb and one short steep section.
The race follows a modified backyard ultra format with a maximum duration of 12 hours. For the first 11 yards, participants must complete the loop every hour on the hour. To remain in the competition, runners are required to be in the starting corral and begin at the bell. Late starts are not permitted.
Specific Competition Rules
The final lap follows a different structure than the previous loops:
- The first 11 loops must be finished within the one-hour time limit.
- The 12th and final yard is a head-to-head race.
- The winner is determined by the person who completes this final lap in the fastest time.
Artificial aids, such as trekking poles, are not allowed during the event. Participants may not leave the course except for restroom use and cannot receive personal aid while on a loop. Timing services are provided for all runners.
Facilities and Support
The event venue includes several amenities for participants and support crews:
- Showers and toilets are available on-site.
- Medics are stationed at the event for safety.
- Hot and cold food and water are provided to runners.
- Basic camping in a field with toilets is available within walking distance of the headquarters.
- Parking at the event headquarters is subject to a fee.
