Trails & Tarmac 12hr BYU - Winter
The Trails & Tarmac Backyard Ultra is a 12-hour endurance event held near Crickhowell in the Black Mountains. The race follows a standard backyard ultra format for the first 11 loops, which are known as yards. Each loop is 4.2 miles long and must be completed within one hour. To remain in the event, participants must be in the starting corral when the bell rings at the start of every hour.
The course features a surface that is divided equally between 50% trail and 50% tarmac. The terrain is described as relatively flat with one gradual climb and a short steep section. Standard backyard ultra rules apply, meaning no personal aid is permitted while on the course and the use of trekking poles or other artificial aids is prohibited.
A unique feature of this event is the conclusion. While the first 11 hours follow the traditional format, the 12th and final yard is a race to determine the winner based on the fastest time. The event is capped at 12 hours total.
Available distances include:
- 4.2 mile loops (one yard per hour)
- 32 miles (completed by reaching the ultra distance benchmark)
The event headquarters provides hot and cold food, medics, showers, and toilets. On-site parking is available for a fee. All participants who complete at least one yard receive a medal, with a special medal designated for those who reach the 32 mile ultra distance.
