Trails & Tarmac Backyard Ultra

Trails & Tarmac is a Backyard Ultra style event held near Crickhowell in the Black Mountains, Powys. The course is a roughly 4.2-mile loop that is approximately half trail and half tarmac, with one gradual climb, a short steep section, and otherwise relatively flat terrain.

The event uses an hourly loop format capped at 12 hours. Competitors must complete each loop within an hour; the first eleven loops follow the standard format and the final loop is contested as a race. The overall result is decided on the final loop. Medals are awarded to anyone completing a loop and a special medal is given to those who reach 32 miles. Winning trophies are provided for first place male and female.

Race rules include mandatory presence in the starting corral at the bell, no late starts, no personal aid during a loop (common aid stations are permitted with one at HQ), and a prohibition on artificial aids including trekking poles and headphones. Supporter restrictions apply around the corral and communication between runners and supporters is restricted while runners are on course.

On-site facilities and services include medics, showers and toilets, event photography available for free download, a pop-up kitchen with hot food served after the fifth loop, basic camping with toilets nearby, and a GPX route file. Entry fee and minimum age are published by the organiser. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
