Trails & Tarmac Summer 12hr BYU : Crickhowell, Powys
Trails & Tarmac Summer 12hr BYU takes place on Saturday 19 September 2026 near Crickhowell in the Black Mountains. The event uses a mixed-surface loop that is roughly 4.2 miles long and is described as 50/50 trail and tarmac, with one gradual climb, a short steep section and otherwise relatively flat terrain. The event is capped at 12 hours. Medals are awarded to anyone who reaches 32 miles (an ultra distance) and trophies are allocated for winners. Minimum age is 17. Entry fee is £75. Entries open 22 September 2025 and close 17 September 2026.
Format, rules and support
The format follows a Backyard Ultra model: the first eleven loops must be completed within an hour each; the final (12th) loop is a race to determine the winner and the direction for that loop is reversed. Loop starts are given with 3, 2 and 1 minute warnings and all competitors must be in the starting corral at the bell. Competitors may not leave the course during a loop except for restrooms. Personal aid during a loop is not allowed; a common aid station will be at HQ. Artificial aids such as trekking poles and headphones are prohibited. Supporter rules include no entry to the corral and restrictions on phone contact with runners while on course. Medics, showers and toilets are provided; hot food is available after the fifth loop. A basic camping field with toilets is available and parking carries a fee. Photographs will be available for free download after the event.
