Trails & Rails - Cloudcroft, New Mexico
Trails & Rails is a mountain trail event held at the Trestle Recreation Area in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, at about 8,676 feet elevation. The courses run on historic railroad grades, an old highway alignment, and sections of forest singletrack that provide overlooks of the Tularosa Basin roughly 4,000 feet below.
Distances offered:
- 8 mile approximately 1,350 feet of elevation gain and loss
- 3 mile approximately 576 feet of elevation change
- 1 mile Kid's Dash for ages 10 and under; strollers allowed
The 8 mile route includes two water stations. The 3 mile course is cup-less and runners must carry their own hydration. Both routes start and finish at the Trestle Recreation Area near the replica depot at the junction of Highway 82 and 130. There are age-group awards and overall prizes; the event provides custom shirts and finisher medals, with shirts guaranteed for early registrants. Registration is non-refundable.
The setting is shaded mountain trails through pine and fir, with historic railroad features and open ridge views. The course terrain and the event’s elevation make pacing and hydration important considerations. A midday cut-off applies to the 3 and 8 mile courses.
