Trail Rail Run over Historic Railroad Grades
The Trail Rail Run is a sanctioned USA Track & Field event scheduled for June 20, 2026. The courses utilize the abandoned Northern Pacific Railroad and Milwaukee Railroad grades. The routes begin in Mullan, Idaho, and head toward the finish line located at St. Regis Community Park in Montana.
Participants can choose from several individual distances and formats:
- 50 Miles (Individual and Hand Cyclist options)
- 50 Mile Relay (Team format)
- 33.5 Miles (50K distance)
- 19.2 Miles (30K distance)
- 7.6 Miles (12K distance)
- 3.8 Miles (5K distance)
The 50-mile course begins along the historic state line between Idaho and Montana. As runners proceed, the route crosses two historical train trestles and passes through a tunnel. The final sections of the trail run parallel to the St. Regis River.
The event concludes at St. Regis Community Park with music, food, and beverages. All participants receive a t-shirt as part of their entry. Runners completing the individual 50-mile distance are eligible for a finisher's jacket, provided they meet specific registration deadlines. Proceeds from the event are directed toward trail improvements, local community projects, and an annual scholarship.
