Durham Trail 5 km
The Durham Trail 5 km is a single distance trail race held as part of the Urban Trail Series. The route starts in Durham City, follows the Weardale Way along the river Wear, passes through the woods of Shincliffe and returns to the city before a final climb to the top of Whinney Hill, which offers an uninterrupted view of Durham Cathedral. The course records and elevation profile are published and route files in GPX and KML format are available.
The course gains about 512 feet and descends about 498 feet. The event uses a two hour cut off. The race is fully marked and marshalled and runners are responsible for their own navigation on the route. Electronic chip timing is provided by TOTS and instant online results are published. Entry includes a bespoke medal, feed stations with water and sweets, medical cover, digital photography and free event parking at The Graham Sports Centre at Maiden Castle, University of Durham, DH1 3SE.
Mandatory kit requires shoes suitable for the ground conditions. The event enforces rules on equipment, checkpoints and safety. Dogs are not permitted on the course. Earphone use is restricted at road crossings, checkpoints and narrow sections; speakers are not allowed. Littering and unsporting behaviour lead to disqualification.
