Tough Mutter : obstacle course race for dogs and owners
Tough Mutter is an obstacle course race that pairs dog handlers with their dogs on off-road routes at Aske estate near Richmond, North Yorkshire, adjacent to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The course runs across marsh, bog, woodland and rough hilly ground, with tracks and fields containing fixed obstacles.
There are multiple course options:
- 5 km course, minimum 38 obstacles.
- 10 km course, minimum 53 obstacles.
- Child-only courses: 5 km and 10 km without dogs.
Obstacles are marked to indicate whether a handler may take their dog, whether only the handler should attempt the obstacle, or whether the handler decides if the dog can take part. Every obstacle includes a tie-up point to secure a dog while the handler completes that element. Near the finish, an 850 metre assault section includes deep mud and water and more than 24 further obstacles. Obstacles are distributed throughout the route; many are large and include multiple components that require climbing, jumping, wading, swinging and crawling.
Age and entry details are set by the organiser: adult with dog courses require adult age, and child-only courses are available for specified age ranges. Entry fees vary by course and by age category, and places are limited. The event is scheduled for 25 October 2026 and entries open and close on specified dates.
