The Tobacco Road Relay
The Tobacco Road Relay is a one-day, 75-mile relay-style running race that traverses the North Carolina Triangle. The course begins in Chapel Hill, passes through Durham, and concludes in Raleigh. Participants navigate a diverse route that includes more than 50 miles of greenways and trails, residential neighborhoods, country roads, and historic protected areas.
The full 75-mile distance is divided into 12 individual legs. These legs vary in distance, with sections ranging from 4.2 miles to 9.6 miles. The event is USATF sanctioned and designed for team participation. Teams are responsible for their own logistics and are permitted to use one team vehicle to move between designated exchange zones. This vehicle carries inactive runners as well as necessary supplies such as food, water, first aid, and ice.
Participants can enter the relay in one of two main team categories:
- Tobacco Road Relay (2-3 Runners)
- Tobacco Road Relay (4-6 Runners)
For teams of six, each participant typically runs two legs of the course. The route explores Orange County and various urban and natural landscapes throughout the region, including single-track trails and both quiet and busy roads. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
