Thurmond Triathlon in Thurmond, WV
The Thurmond Triathlon takes place on June 28, 2026 in the town of Thurmond, West Virginia, with event activities centered at the Dun Glen Pavilion and 174 Main Street. The event is organized by Active Southern West Virginia and proceeds benefit free local physical activity programs.
All participants complete three sequential sections: biking, paddling, and running. Course highlights include a bike segment that starts at the Historic Thurmond Depot and a paddling segment on the New River that passes through moving water with small whitewater rapids. The run course crosses the Thurmond bridge and loops around historic Thurmond. Distances and surfaces are:
- Bike: 2 miles, Thurmond Depot to Stonecliff, pavement and gravel.
- Paddle: 1.5 miles, Stonecliff to Dun Glen, moving river with obstacles.
- Run: 2 miles, Dun Glen area, cross the Thurmond bridge, pavement and gravel.
Equipment and safety requirements state that participants must provide their own bike, helmet, paddle, and PFD or select a rental. Helmets are required for both biking and paddling; e-bikes are not allowed. Personal watercraft must be self-propelled and no longer than 12 feet. Event services include chip timing, water stations, finisher medals for children, a short-sleeve event shirt (sizes guaranteed for registrations received by June 1), and post-race snacks and lunch.
