Event overview
The Thurmond Triathlon is held in Thurmond, West Virginia at the Dun Glen Pavilion, 174 Main Street. The event features three registration categories: Solo, Duo, and Team (3+). All participants complete the biking, paddling, and running sections of the course. Chip timing, water stations, finisher medals for kids, a short-sleeve event t-shirt (register by 6/1 to guarantee size), and post-race snacks and lunch are provided. Proceeds support Active Southern West Virginia.
Course and equipment
The course includes these segments:
- Bike: 2 miles (Historic Thurmond Depot to Stonecliff) on pavement and gravel.
- Paddle: 1.5 miles (Stonecliff back to Dun Glen Day Use Area) on moving river water with small whitewater rapids and obstacles.
- Run: 2 miles (from Dun Glen area, cross Thurmond bridge, loop around historic Thurmond, finish at Dun Glen) on pavement and gravel.
Participants must provide their own bike, helmet, paddle, and PFD/lifejacket unless renting a watercraft. Helmets are required for both biking and paddling. No e-bikes are allowed; a mountain or hybrid bike is recommended. Watercraft must be self-propelled and no longer than 12 feet, or a rental may be selected. Rental options listed: Single Duckie $35, Double Duckie $45. Equipment should be labeled with the race number. The course is marked with directional arrows; watch for trains and CSX railroad tracks.
Registration and awards
Registration is offered for Solo, Duo, and Team (3+) with phased pricing that increases closer to the event; race-day prices are Solo $50, Duo $60, Team $65. Awards are given to top finishers by age group for Solo and by age/age-composition categories for Duo and Team entries. A paddling safety reminder notes that some paddling experience is recommended and that properly fitted life jackets should be worn while on the river.
