Thurmond Triathlon
The Thurmond Triathlon is scheduled for June 28, 2026, in Thurmond, West Virginia, at 174 Main Street. The event is described as beginner-friendly and combines biking, paddling, and running on a marked course that starts and finishes near the Dun Glen Day Use Area and the Historic Thurmond Depot.
All participants complete every race section. Segment distances are:
- Bike: 2 miles
- Paddle: 1.5 miles
- Run: 2 miles
Categories include Solo, Duo, and Team (3+). Duos and teams must complete all sections together and cross the finish line together. Chip timing will be used for official results. Water stations are available along the route; finisher medals are provided for children and a short-sleeve event t-shirt is guaranteed for those registered by June 1. Post-race snacks and lunch are provided.
Participants must supply their own bike, helmet, paddle, and personal flotation device unless renting a watercraft. Helmets are required on the biking and paddling sections. No e-bikes are permitted; a mountain or hybrid bike is recommended. Personal watercraft must be self-propelled and no longer than 12 feet. Rental options are offered for single and double duckies with associated rental fees.
The paddling section follows a moving section of the New River with small rapids and obstacles; paddling experience and a properly fitted life jacket are advised. Course markings include directional arrows, and racers should watch for trains and cross CSX railroad tracks with care. Proceeds support Active Southern West Virginia.
