Event details
The Thurmond Triathlon is scheduled for June 28, 2026 in Thurmond, West Virginia, with the event base at Dun Glen Pavilion, 174 Main Street. The event is presented by Active Southern West Virginia and is described by the organizer as beginner-friendly. Proceeds support Active Southern West Virginia programs.
Course and safety
All participants complete three consecutive sections: bike, paddle, and run.
- Bike: 2 miles (pavement and gravel; starts at the Historic Thurmond Depot and rides to Stonecliff)
- Paddle: 1.5 miles (Stonecliff to Dun Glen; moving river with small whitewater rapids and obstacles to avoid)
- Run: 2 miles (from Dun Glen, cross the Thurmond bridge, loop around historic Thurmond, return to Dun Glen; pavement and gravel)
Participants must provide their own bike, helmet, paddle, and PFD/lifejacket unless renting a watercraft. Helmets are required for both biking and paddling sections (the same helmet may be used). No e-bikes are allowed; a mountain or hybrid bike is recommended. Personal watercraft must be self-propelled and no longer than 12 feet. Limited rental options are offered with set prices for single and double inflatables. The organizer notes that some paddling experience is recommended and that properly fitted life jackets must be worn on the river.
Registration and awards
Registration categories are Solo, Duo, and Team (3+). The event includes chip timing, water stations, finisher medals for children, short-sleeve event shirts (register by June 1 to guarantee a shirt), and post-race snacks and lunch. Awards are given by age and category across Solo, Duo, and Team divisions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
