Event Overview
The Three Course Challenge is a cross-country event hosted by Seaside High School at Camp Rilea, just north of Seaside, Oregon. Since 1990, over 50,000 runners have participated. The event is described as celebrating the sport of cross country. Runners from middle school to high school compete on different courses.
Courses and Distances
Participants can choose from four courses:
- Easy (White Flags): A 4,300-meter course with a gradual incline.
- Moderate (Blue Flags): A 5,000-meter course featuring water crossings and a steep uphill section called the Elk Trail.
- Difficult (Red Flags): A 5,000-meter course with three steep hills, including Butterfly Hill and the Elk Trail.
- Middle School (Yellow Flags): A 3,000-meter course run on grass, dirt, sand roads, and trails, with no pavement.
Event Features
Chip timing is provided by Eclectic Edge Racing. Awards are given to the top 10 finishers in each division, and plaques and medals are awarded to top teams. The Last Regiment Drum Corps provides live music. A Spaghetti Dinner is held at Seaside High School on Friday night.
Lodging Information
Team lodging is available on-site at Camp Rilea. The cost is $15 per bed, with floor space offered for free if needed beyond the bed count. Teams staying overnight are separated by gender, and coed teams require both a male and female chaperone. Lodging requests are submitted by coaches via a Google Form sent out over the summer, with assignments shared at least one week before the event. Teams staying at Camp Rilea also have access to an Ice Cream Social and T-shirt exchange on Friday night. An optional Pancake Breakfast is available Saturday morning.
