Thorne Head Trail Run
The Thorne Head Trail Run is a small, community-focused trail run held at Thorne Head Preserve in Bath on October 31, 2026. The event is limited to 150 participants and raises funds for the local trail system and environmental education run by the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust. Registration is $35 and proceeds support conservation and trail work.
The course is 2.5 miles with about 239 feet of elevation gain. Runners follow a mix of single track and wider trails: a slight uphill on Overlook Trail, then Ridgerunner and Whiskeag Trail, a technical riverfront section on Narrows Trail, and a finish back on Overlook Trail. The preserve features waterfront views at the confluence of the Kennebec River and Whiskeag Creek and woodlands with hemlock, white pine, and red pine.
The event emphasizes a relaxed, non-competitive format: there are no bibs, timing chips, or overall winners. Every finisher receives a one-of-a-kind mug and a fall-style finisher breakfast that includes apple cider donuts, hot coffee, cider, bacon, and apples. Amenities include two portapotties at the start/finish, a covered bag drop, volunteers stationed on course for wayfinding and photos, and buses between Bath Middle School and the start on a rolling basis. There are no aid stations or water on the trail.
Pets and running strollers are not permitted. Kids over 10 may register with a parent signature. The event proceeds in rain or shine except for lightning; if canceled, registrations are non-refundable. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
