Thetford Back Yard Ultra Festival : High Lodge, Thetford Forest
Thetford Back Yard Ultra Festival is a competitive Backyard Ultra held at High Lodge in Thetford Forest, Suffolk. The format requires competitors to complete a loop of 4.167 miles (6.7056 km) every hour; each loop must be finished before the next hour begins or the runner is recorded as DNF. The event follows official Backyard Ultra rules for starts, corral use and loop completion.
Three entry options are provided: the full event and timed 12-hour and 6-hour options at reduced cost. The 6-hour option has a lowered minimum age of 12; minors must have a parent or guardian onsite and provide their emergency contact. Timed entrants cannot continue past their allotted time and will be recorded as DNF if they attempt to do so. Chip timing is used and a prize of £250 and free entry to a summer event is offered to the overall winner of the full event.
The route is wide and mostly flat through forest, mainly gravel or grass with firm underfoot surfaces and one small hill; it is fully signed. There is a single aid station at the start/finish area supplying hot and cold water and basic snacks for competitors and crews. Camping is provided free for runners and crews across two designated areas; tent sizes should be compact and no cooking is allowed in camping zones except in a supervised cooking area. There is no mains power on site, signal is patchy and a limited charging station for runners will be available. Rules restrict crew access to the starting corral and prohibit pets and smoking in camping areas. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
