Stonyhurst Tolkien Trail Race
The Stonyhurst Tolkien Trail Race is an 11.1 km trail run held at Stonyhurst College in Hurst Green, Clitheroe, Lancashire. The course gains approximately 528 ft of elevation and combines riverside paths, rolling fields and woodland trails that the organiser links to places that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories.
The route starts on the college avenue and follows a farm track into woodland, with features including forest steps, an old stone bridge, the River Hodder, the Cromwell Bridge (built 1562), a riverside trail along the River Ribble and an aqueduct (built 1880). Runners pass a field behind the Shireburn Arms and return through the village and down the avenue to the college grounds.
Practical details published for the event note an entry fee of £30 per runner. Registration is located outside the front of Stonyhurst College. Parking is provided on the college grounds; entrants are asked to approach via Knowels Brow Road rather than the village avenue and to follow marshal directions for a one way system.
The organiser is Stonyhurst Experience. Event souvenirs for 2026 include a medal, a commemorative buff and a commemorative car sticker, with race merchandise available at a pre-order stall. Key participation rules include displaying the issued race number, no running with another person’s bib, no dogs, no littering and respectful behaviour toward volunteers. Minimum age for entry is 15 years old.
