The Turbine Backyard Ultra

The Turbine Backyard Ultra is a single-day endurance event held on 19 September 2026 at West Shields Farm, Satley, near Tow Law, Durham. Competitors repeatedly complete a 4.1-mile loop on the hour every hour; the bell is sounded exactly on the hour and any runner who has not returned to the start area before the bell is recorded as a DNF. Only one competitor will avoid a DNF and be declared the individual winner.

The private course is undulating, with approximately 400 ft of elevation gain per loop, and mixes farmland, single-track trail and woodland dirt tracks. The route is fully waymarked and marshalled but cannot be recceed before race day. Participants must wear clothing appropriate to the weather; those judged by the event team to be inappropriately dressed may be unable to continue. Runners who expect to continue into darkness should carry a headtorch and spare batteries.

On-site provisions include GPX live tracking, toilets, first aid cover, a fully stocked runners feed station with hot and cold water, access to a microwave and toaster for runners and their crew, and a catering stall offering hot and cold drinks and snacks. Camping and parking are available from 18 September for runners and their crew. Entries include an eco memento; the event uses eco-friendly race goodies such as a packet of mixed wild flower seeds. Team entries are available for up to five people, with team scoring while at least two team members remain running. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
