Event Overview
The Turbine Backyard Ultra is an endurance event held at West Shields Farm in Satley, near Tow Law. Following the traditional backyard ultra format, participants must complete a 4.1-mile loop every hour on the hour. The event continues until only one runner remains. Any athlete who does not reach the starting area before the bell sounds at the start of a new hour is disqualified and recorded as a DNF (Did Not Finish). Only the final finisher, who completes a solo loop after all other participants have dropped out, is designated the winner.
Course Details
The route consists of a mixture of farmland, single-track trails, and woodland dirt tracks. Every 4.1-mile loop includes approximately 400ft of elevation gain. As the event takes place on private land, pre-event reconnaissance of the course is not permitted. The race uses a new course layout for the 2026 edition.
Entry Categories
Participants can enter the event in various ways:
- Solo
- Teams of up to 5 people
In the team category, the total yards completed by members are combined. A team remains active as long as at least two members are still running. Once only one member of a team remains, that individual is categorized as a solo runner for the remainder of the competition.
Facilities and Support
The event provides several on-site amenities for runners and their support crews. A fully stocked feed station offers access to hot and cold water, a microwave, and a toaster. Medical cover is provided by first aid professionals, and the route is fully waymarked and marshalled. GPX live tracking is used to monitor progress.
Free camping and parking are available on-site starting the day before the event. Facilities include toilets and a coffee box selling hot drinks and snacks. All participants receive a bespoke eco-memento. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
