The Drop - Newcastle
The Drop is a stripped back navigation challenge based at The Cosy Dove, 62 - 64 Hunters Road, Spital Tongues, Newcastle NE2 4NA. Participants are transported to an undisclosed location and must find their own way back to the event centre without navigational aids.
Distances offered include:
- 15 miles: original, longer distance with extended decision making and fatigue.
- 10 miles: same rules in a shorter, sharper format.
- 6 miles: shorter option open only to non locals to avoid advantage.
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids and receive a race number plus a sealed emergency bag to carry for the duration. Deployment is by bus while wearing blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives; the drop location and initial orientation are not revealed.
When blindfolds are removed the participant’s time starts. The challenge permits movement on foot only and prohibits maps, GPS, compasses, and outside help. Breaking the emergency bag seal results in disqualification. Distances are measured as the crow flies and the actual route will be longer.
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional feature for safety. Trackers are stated to be accurate within five metres but can be affected by tall buildings and black spots.
