The Drop - Newcastle
The Drop is a navigation challenge where participants are taken to an unknown location and must find their own way back to the event centre. There are no route markers, no maps, no GPS, no compass, and no external help once dropped.
Registration requires handing over electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. Each participant receives a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried for the duration; breaking the seal causes disqualification.
Deployment is by bus while wearing blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives. When the blindfolds are removed the clock starts and every navigation decision is the participant's responsibility. Movement on foot only is permitted; no transport or shortcuts.
Available distance options:
- 10 miles measured as the crow flies
- 15 miles measured as the crow flies
- 6 miles measured as the crow flies, restricted to non locals
Distances are measured as the crow flies so actual routes will be longer. Blindfolds can be replaced with blackout safety goggles if required. The event offers optional live GPS tracking for safety and sharing; trackers are accurate within 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings and black spots. Trackers must be returned at the end of the event or a £175 replacement fee applies.
Event centre location: The Cosy Dove, 62 - 64 Hunters Road, Spital Tongues, Newcastle NE2 4NA. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
