Event overview
The Drop - Newcastle is an orienteering-style challenge held at The Cosy Dove, 62-64 Hunters Road, Spital Tongues, Newcastle NE2 4NA. The event offers two distance options:
- 15-mile
- 10-mile
Participants are transported to an undisclosed drop-off location and must make their own way back to the event centre. Distances are measured as the crow flies; the actual route travelled may be longer.
Race format and rules
At registration participants hand over all electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag. Blindfolds or blackout safety goggles are used for the drop; an alternative is available if needed. No map, GPS, route instructions, compass, or outside help is permitted unless organisers supply a map. Devices used to record progress must remain sealed in the provided emergency bag; breaking the seal leads to disqualification. Shortcuts are not allowed and the race must be completed under human power.
Logistics and tracking
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional, paid feature and requires login details supplied before the event. Trackers are said to be accurate within 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings and signal black spots; placement in an outer pocket with a clear view of the sky is recommended. All trackers must be returned after the event or a replacement fee of £175 will apply. Parking is available in the town centre. The nearest railway station is a 10 minute walk from the event HQ and the bus station is about 5 minutes away. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
