About the race
The Drop - Newcastle is a navigation challenge based at The Cosy Dove, 62–64 Hunters Road, Spital Tongues, Newcastle NE2 4NA. Participants are taken by bus to an undisclosed drop location while blindfolded and must find their own way back to the event centre on foot without external navigation aids.
At registration participants hand over all electronic devices, watches, and navigational aids. Each person receives a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried for the duration; breaking the seal results in disqualification.
Distances are measured as the crow flies; the actual route travelled will be longer. Options offered:
- 6 miles: for non-locals only, to avoid local knowledge advantage
- 10 miles: standard Drop distance
- 15 miles: longer Drop with greater distance and decision-making
Rules include no GPS, no unauthorised maps, and travel on foot only. Entrants may be checked for local knowledge and moved between distance categories if necessary. Blindfolds can be replaced with blackout safety goggles on request.
An optional live GPS tracking service is available for safety; trackers must be returned at event end or a £175 replacement fee applies. Tracker accuracy may be affected by tall buildings or black spots, and placement in an outside pocket is recommended for best signal performance.
