The Stoop - Wharfedale Harriers
The Stoop is a senior fell race organised by Wharfedale Harriers at Penistone Hill Country Park. The race distance is 4.9 miles with 700 ft of ascent and follows a circular route from the quarry bottom on Penistone, up past Drop Farm to Harbour Lodge, around the Standing Stone (the Stoop) and back down across the boggy sections to finish on the cricket pitch.
The route uses footpaths and tracks; runners are asked to use the right-hand footbridge at the side of Harbour Lodge because the left-hand bridge is unsafe. The course description notes narrow paths, a beck crossing via a footpath, and sections through heather and bog.
The senior race is part of the Woodentops Race Series, which includes Withins Skyline and Stanbury Splash, and chip timing will be used for these races. Entry options are online pre-entry at £9 or entry on the day at £10. Teams of three are free. The event provides a Santa hat for all entrants and free coffee and biscuits; prize giving will take place outside the cricket hut after the race.
