The Stoop

The Stoop is a senior fell race organised by Wharfedale Harriers around Penistone Hill Country Park. The course is listed as 4.9 mile with approximately 700 ft of ascent and a BM classification. Entry on the day is charged at £5 for seniors and teams of three may enter free. The event is open to runners aged over 16 only. All entrants receive a Santa hat and free tea and coffee and biscuits are available at the finish area.

The route starts from the quarry bottom on Penistone and follows a track past Drop Farm where the path narrows. Runners follow a footpath to Harbour Lodge, cross the beck via the right hand footbridge at the side of Harbour Lodge, and then follow a heather path up to the Standing Stone known as the Stoop. The return route descends through boggy sections to rejoin the initial track before crossing the road and finishing on the cricket pitch by West End Cricket Club, Penistone Hill (GR 023 363). Organisers advise that full kit may be required, especially by seniors, for example a waterproof jacket with hood, leggings, hat and gloves; if kit is declared necessary then runners without kit will not be allowed to run.

Prizes include places for the first 10 men and ladies, age category veteran prizes, under 21 prizes, spot prizes and team prizes. One prize is awarded per person and the prize list may be reduced if fewer than 200 senior runners take part. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
