Event Overview
The Squatchy Surprise is a running and hiking event taking place on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey. It is inspired by the TommyKnocker Ultra. The event is described as a "Trail Party" supporting the non-profit organization Bigger Than The Trail, which uses trail running as a platform for mental health advocacy.
Course and Format
The event does not use a standard fixed course. Instead, participants draw a colored golf ball from a bucket to randomly determine which of four different trail loops they will run for each segment. A black golf ball allows the runner to choose their loop. After each loop, participants draw again for the next segment. A volunteer team tracks completed loops on a chart. Participants must keep their bibs visible at all times.
At 6:00 PM, runners must choose one of two options: continue drawing golf balls for the existing loops or wait until 6:30 PM to run a repetitive 1/2 mile mini loop. Choosing one option precludes using the other. Any loop not completed before the event ends does not count toward final mileage. Runners are allowed one "Charity Mulligan" to re-draw an undesired golf ball for a $20 cash donation, with proceeds going to Bigger Than The Trail.
Distances and Entry Options
The event offers three timed options: 12-hour, 6-hour, and 3-hour durations. A "Hardship Entry" option is available for those experiencing financial hardship, offering a full or partial scholarship upon registration.
Awards and Amenities
Awards are given to the top three male, female, and non-binary participants who accumulate the most miles. All participants receive a handcrafted wooden medal and a finisher's item. Swag is distributed during check-in.
Family and Community
The event is family-friendly. A "Squatch Kids Club" offers a 15% discount for registrants under age 19 and free entries are available for some youth athletes. Discounts are also offered for families registering three or more members from the same household. Spectating children receive wooden star medallions. Family games like corn hole and a Squatch Hunt are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
