The Squatchy Surprise
The Squatchy Surprise is a trail running event held at the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey. The event operates on a unique format where participants determine their course by drawing golf balls from a bucket. Each of the four different trail loops is represented by a specific color, while a black golf ball allows the runner to choose their preferred loop.
The event features three duration options:
- 12 hours
- 6 hours
- 3 hours
Participants aim to complete as many loops as possible within their chosen timeframe. The course consists of a mix of hard-packed carriage trails and technical singletracks featuring rocks and roots. The shortest loop is 3 miles and the longest is 5.5 miles. There is a small section of pavement less than 0.2 miles long and two road crossings at stoplights.
A central aid station at Squatch HQ provides hydration and nutrition, including water, electrolyte drinks, fruit, snacks, and hot food options. The event supports the charity Bigger Than The Trail (BTTT). Special race rules include a "Charity-Mulligan" option where runners can donate to redraw a different golf ball. In the final hour of the event, participants must choose between continuing to draw for full loops or transitioning to a 0.5 mile mini-loop to accumulate final mileage.
The event is capped at 250 participants across all distances. Facilities at the start and finish area include private changing tents and a quiet space known as the Jackalope Tent. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
