Event details
The Squatchy Surprise takes place on July 25, 2026 at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey. The event offers timed formats of 12-hour, 6-hour and 3-hour participation and is capped at 250 entrants across all formats. It supports Bigger Than The Trail (BTTT), a 501(c)(3) organization that funds free therapy through its fundraising efforts. Children under 19 may register; youth entries receive a discount option and a wooden star medallion for registered or spectating kids.
Course, format and logistics
The event uses four distinct trail loops. Before each loop, participants draw a colored golf ball from a bucket to determine which loop to run; a black golf ball allows the participant to choose any loop. Participants repeat the draw after each loop until the event cutoff. One optional "Charity-Mulligan" allows a single re-draw for a cash donation; proceeds go to the charity partner. The course is marked with colored ribbons and reflective tape; finish/aid area is at Tulip Springs (Squatch HQ). The only aid station is at the start/finish and includes hydration (Skratch hydration products), pre-packaged snacks plus gluten-free and vegan options on request, a first aid kit and an AED. Portajohns are available at the start/finish. Pacers/guides are allowed for participants aged 60+ and athletes with disabilities; dogs are not permitted.
