Squatchy Surprise
Squatchy Surprise is a trail party held at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey on July 25, 2026. The event uses timed formats where participants may complete as many loops as they can within 12 hour, 6 hour, or 3 hour time limits. Loop assignments are determined by drawing colored golf balls from a bucket before each loop; drawing a black golf ball allows the participant to choose a loop.
The course area blends wide packed carriage trails and technical singletrack with rocks and roots. There are four main loops plus several short novelty loops, and total elevation depends on which loops are drawn. The event capacity is capped at 250 participants across all formats.
Squatch HQ at the Tulip Springs / Boy Scout Area serves as the single aid station and start/finish hub. The aid station supplies hydration and a variety of food options including gluten free and vegan choices on request, a first aid kit and AED, portable toilets including an ADA unit, private changing tents, and a quiet Jackalope Tent. Volunteers track completed loops at Squatch HQ and runners must keep their bib visible. Pacers or guides may accompany athletes over 60 and athletes with disabilities when pre registered. Crews are allowed only at Squatch HQ. A single Charity Mulligan is available for a cash donation and proceeds support the charity partner Bigger Than The Trail.
