The Squatchy Surprise
The Squatchy Surprise is a timed trail event on July 25, 2026 at the South Mountain Reservation (Tulip Springs picnic area) in West Orange, New Jersey. The event offers three timed formats and a unique loop-selection game using a bucket of colored golf balls. Runners and hikers draw a ball before each loop to determine which of four marked loops they will run; a black ball allows the participant to choose any loop. The draw process repeats after every loop until a later decision point when participants must elect to continue drawing or switch to a separate mini loop. Any loop not completed before the event timer ends does not count toward final mileage. One optional Charity-Mulligan is available for a cash donation; proceeds support Bigger Than The Trail, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that funds free therapy through trail running advocacy.
The course combines hard-packed carriage trails and technical singletrack with rocks and roots. Course markings use colored ribbons and reflective tape for night visibility. The only aid station is at Squatch HQ (start/finish area) and includes first aid, an AED, menstrual products, wipes, hydration options, packaged snacks, fruit, and hot food items. Pacers or guides are permitted for participants age 60 and older and for athletes with disabilities; crews may access runners only at Squatch HQ. The event is capped at 250 participants. Facilities at the picnic area include porta-johns; dogs are not permitted. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
