The MTC Severn Plod Ultra
The MTC Severn Plod Ultra is a point to point ultramarathon covering 48 miles. The route starts at Mid Wales Art Centre, Maesmawr SY17 5SB, follows sections away from and alongside the River Severn, joins the Montgomery Canal Walk and passes Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve, Welshpool, Offa’s Dyke Path and the Breidden Hills before finishing at the Premier Inn, Shrewsbury SY1 1PG. Total ascent is 650 m and total descent is 581 m. This is the 10th edition of the event and the course record is 7:27:00.
The race has four checkpoints and a mandatory minimum pace of 4 mph; competitors who fall below this average will not be allowed to continue. Checkpoint food is available with vegan and gluten free options selected at registration. Competitors who require other dietary choices must supply labelled, bagged food for each checkpoint at registration. Events are cup free so competitors should bring a reusable cup. GPX navigation is recommended as parts of the Severn Path can be overgrown.
Entry is by paid registration, standard solo entry fee is £90 and all payments are non refundable. A deferral option to the next year is available for a fee within four weeks of the event, and an optional personal cancellation insurance policy can be added at booking. Competitors are responsible for their own travel to the start and from the finish.
All entrants must be at least 20 years old on the start day and carry the mandatory kit list, which includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, map or GPS, compass, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid kit and emergency food. All finishers receive a bespoke Severn Plod Ultra medal; each competitor receives an MTC head visor at the start and the first male and female finishers receive bespoke trophies.
