The MTC Severn Plod Ultra
The event is a point to point ultra marathon of approximately 48 miles that runs from Mid Wales Art Centre, Maesmawr to Shrewsbury. The route initially moves inland through Holly Bush and Rhyd-y-felin before rejoining the River Severn at Dolerw Park. The course follows the Severn and joins the Montgomery Canal Walk, passing Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve, Welshpool, sections of Offa’s Dyke Path and the Breidden Hills before reaching Montford Bridge, Bicton and the outskirts of Shrewsbury, with the finish at a hotel in Shrewsbury.
There are four staffed checkpoints along the route. Checkpoint food is provided with an option to select either vegan or gluten free supplies at registration; competitors who require other specific foods must supply prebagged items for each checkpoint. All events are cup free so runners must carry a reusable cup.
Competitors must maintain a minimum average pace of 4.0 miles per hour and will be withdrawn if they fall below the required pace. Navigation relies on GPX files and maps because much of the route is not signed and sections of the Severn Path can be overgrown. Mandatory kit is enforced and includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, map, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid kit and emergency food. Entrants must be aged 20 or over. Entry fees are non refundable. All finishers receive a bespoke medal and each competitor receives an MTC head visor at the start; male and female winners receive trophies.
