The MTC Severn Plod Ultra

The MTC Severn Plod Ultra is a point-to-point ultramarathon held on 9th July 2026. The course distance is 48 miles with approximately 650 m of ascent and 581 m of descent. This is the 10th edition of the event. The published course record is 7:27:00. The race starts at Mid Wales Art Centre, Maesmawr, SY17 5SB and finishes at the Premier Inn in Shrewsbury, SY1 1PG.

Route and support

The route initially stays away from the river, passing through Holly Bush and Rhyd-y-felin, then rejoining the River Severn at Dolerw Park and passing the Gorsedd stone circle. It continues along the Severn, joins the Montgomery Canal Walk, and goes past Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve, Welshpool, Offa’s Dyke Path and the Breidden Hills, through Montford Bridge and Bicton into the outskirts of Shrewsbury. The event has four checkpoints. Checkpoint food options include vegan and gluten-free choices when selected at entry; competitors who require other special foods must provide labeled bags for each checkpoint. The event is cup-free; competitors should bring a reusable cup. Organisers recommend using the provided GPX files for navigation because the Severn Path can be overgrown and signs may be obscured.

Entry, rules and kit

Standard solo entry is £90 and all fees are non refundable. Competitors must be at least 20 years old on race day. Runners must maintain a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph or they will not be allowed to continue. A mandatory kit list includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, Ordnance Survey Map 150 or downloadable maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food (two chocolate bars) and a basic first aid kit. All finishers receive a bespoke medal and each competitor receives a complimentary MTC head visor; trophies are awarded to male and female champions.
