About the race
The Rugged Red Trail Half Marathon is a trail running event held at Natural Bridge Campground in Slade, Kentucky. The main race is a 13.1-mile loop course on private property in the Red River Gorge. The in-person half marathon has a 5.5 hour time limit (about a 25 minute per mile pace). A virtual half marathon option lets participants complete 13.1 miles on their own schedule; the virtual option includes mailing of the commemorative shirt and finisher medal and an optional time log.
Awards are given to the top three men and top three women overall and to top three men and women in five-year age divisions, with age groups from 0-19 up to 70+. Participants receive a long-sleeved performance shirt; finishing within the time limit earns a finisher medal. The event is cup-less on course, so runners should use a water bottle or self-hydration system; the organizers provide hydration at the start area and water at five locations along the route.
On-course and post-race amenities listed by the organizer include free race photos, coffee, a complimentary beer for participants 21 and older, a provided BBQ lunch, DJ music at the finish, team pricing for groups of five or more with a $5 saving per team member, and post-race recovery services. There is special age-based pricing of $35 for participants ages 10 to 16. The organizer seeks 15 to 20 race-day volunteers. Packet pickup is offered at a Lexington location and at the Natural Bridge Campground pavilion, plus a last-chance option on race morning.
