About the race
The Quest! is a fantasy-themed trail event in Auburn, California on March 13, 2027, organized by Bad Luck Run Club. The event scores finishers by combining running time with quest achievements rather than pure speed.
Before the run each participant rolls a virtual D20 to determine a character class (Frog Knight, Mage, Rogue, Bard, Druid, or Knight). Classes grant unique abilities and influence party bonuses. Runners may form parties of 2–3 people to unlock class-based time bonuses; parties are verified at the end of the race.
The route and course details are kept secret until event day. Two route options are offered:
- Odyssey 12 Mile: 12 miles minimum with upwards of 1500 ft elevation gain.
- Sprint 6 Mile: 6 miles minimum with upwards of 500 ft elevation gain.
The format centers on Side Quests and bosses placed along the trail. Each runner receives 40 minutes added to their overall time at the finish; completed side quests reduce that time, with at least 5 minutes removed per completed quest. Side quests include riddles, scavenger hunts, physical challenges, and locating themed characters. Boss encounters and a final turn-in at Ponderosa Cider Co determine final rewards and standings.
Entry includes a custom D20, a Quest shirt, a trail map, and a post-run cider. Required or recommended gear includes a camera phone, a backpack, and a water bottle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
