The Nelson Half Marathon
The Nelson Half Marathon is an annual running and walking event based at Saxton Field with start and finish at the Suburbs Football Pavilion. It offers a range of distances for participants who wish to run or walk.
- 21.1 km Half Marathon Run/Walk
- 10 km Run/Walk
- 5 km Fun Run/Walk
- 2.5 km Fun Run/Walk
Most of the courses run on the walkway systems around Stoke and the Great Taste Trail. Around 90% of the route is on dedicated walkways and the courses include views across the Waimea Inlet. The event makes use of local pathways rather than road closures.
All finishers receive a medal. First place trophies are awarded to men and women runners and walkers in the half marathon and 10 km events. The first three male and female finishers in the 5 km and 2.5 km events also receive awards. Spot prizes are available to competitors, and the organisers reserve the right to restrict under‑18s from alcoholic prizes.
Course support includes three drink stations on the half marathon course and one on the 10 km course; there are no drink stations on the 5 km and 2.5 km courses. Limited showers are available at the venue and a photographer will be on course. Baby buggies and wheelchairs are permitted on the 10 km, 5 km and 2.5 km courses but are not suitable for the half marathon. Bikes, rollerblades, skateboards and dogs are not permitted.
Entry fees vary by distance and age. An early bird discount applies until 31 May. A cancellation fee applies for the half marathon and 10 km; there are no refunds for the 5 km and 2.5 km. If the event cannot be held, entries may be postponed to a later date or roll over to the next scheduled running, with no general refund policy.
