The Moors the Merrier

The Moors the Merrier is a Christmas period walk and race held in the Hebden Bridge area on a circular countryside route. The course covers 21 miles with about 3900 ft of ascent and visits Midgley Moor, Wadsworth Moor, Heptonstall Moor and Erringden Moor before returning to Mytholmroyd Community Centre in Hebden Bridge. The event offers both a competitive race and a non competitive walk/run; the race has an age minimum of 18.

The event is fully supported with multiple well stocked checkpoints, tracking provided by OpenTracking and live results. Participants are offered tea, coffee and toast at the start area and a hot pie and peas meal with additional seasonal treats at the finish. Changing rooms and showers are available at the community centre and a bar operates in the early afternoon. A bran tub of donated presents and a raffle are part of the finish area arrangements.

The route is not flagged and requires navigation skills; a GPX file is available as a backup and GPS devices may be used for safety. Because the event takes place in winter and has a festive theme, participants must carry specific kit including a Santa hat and a present for the bran tub, waterproofs with taped seams and a hood, hat and gloves, map, compass and whistle, survival bag, headtorch, spare clothing and spare food and drink.
