The Mermaid Run
The Mermaid Run is a running event scheduled for August 22, 2026, taking place at Festival Park in Aberdeen, Maryland. The event features multiple race distances and formats to accommodate different participation preferences:
- 5K: A 3.11-mile distance on a USATF certified course.
- Mermaid Mile: A 1-mile running race.
- Mermaid Virtual 5K: A 3.1-mile remote race option with shipping included.
The physical 5K course is noted for being flat. Participants in the 5K receive professional chip-timing provided by Blue Cheetah Sports Timing, along with an event shirt and a finisher's medal. The event encourages the use of costumes and includes music and prizes for attendees.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Sea of Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and financial assistance to families experiencing infancy and pregnancy loss. The foundation also provides scholarships to bereaved siblings to support their educational pursuits.
The race takes place rain or shine. For those unable to attend the live event in Aberdeen, virtual options are available for both domestic and international participants. Participants who cannot attend the live race can request to have their race items mailed for an additional fee if requested by the end of August.
