The swim courses start in the water and follow a rectangular perimeter with yellow turn buoys and orange sighting buoys every 75 meters; athletes exit via swim ladders. Water temperatures in August are typically expected in the mid to upper 70s and an official reading is posted before the event.
Bike routes use well paved, rural roads with low traffic, and are described as hilly and technical in places while offering long straight sections and scenic views. The Olympic bike route records roughly 1300 feet of elevation; the sprint route roughly 513 feet.
Run courses are rolling out and back segments on the shoulder of the main road south of town, on paved surfaces with limited shade. Aid is provided on the run with ice water and Gatorade approximately every mile.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Race categories include Overall, Masters, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena and Relay Teams. Packet pickup is available at North East Community Park, 219 W Walnut St, North East MD 21901 on the days before and the morning of the event.
