North East Triathlon
The North East Triathlon takes place in North East, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay and includes Olympic and Sprint triathlon and aquabike options. The event courses run through Cecil County and Elk Neck State Forest and use bay water for the swim.
- North East Olympic: 1.5K swim, about 22.8 mile bike, 10K run
- North East Sprint: 750 m swim, 11 mile bike, 5K run
The swim begins with an in water start in the Chesapeake Bay on a rectangular perimeter course. Athletes exit at the start via swim ladders. The course uses yellow turn buoys and orange sighting buoys placed about every 75 meters. Water temperatures in August are typically in the mid to upper 70s and a temperature reading is posted the Friday before the event.
The bike routes move quickly into rural roads and Elk Neck State Forest. Pavement is described as good; courses are low traffic, hilly and technical in places, and include long straight sections. Elevation information is provided for each course.
The runs are rolling out and back courses on the shoulder of the main road south of town, with limited shade, two turns, and aid stations offering ice water and Gatorade about every mile.
Packet pickup is available at North East Community Park, 219 W Walnut St, North East MD 21901. Photo ID is required to collect event materials. The race is USA Triathlon sanctioned. All registered athletes receive race clothing, socks, a finisher medal, post race food and drink, and finisher photos. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
