North East Triathlon
The North East Triathlon is a multi-distance event held in North East, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. The event offers Olympic and Sprint triathlon and aquabike formats. Courses use waterfront swim lanes, rural roads through Cecil County and Elk Neck State Forest, and paved shoulder running routes south of town.
- Olympic Triathlon: 1.5K swim, 25.4 mile bike, 10K run
- Olympic Aquabike: 1.5K swim, 25.4 mile bike
- Sprint Triathlon: 750 m swim, 11 mile bike, 5K run
- Sprint Aquabike: 750 m swim, 11 mile bike
The swim courses start in the water and follow a rectangular perimeter in the Chesapeake Bay, with swim ladders at the exit. Turns are marked with yellow buoys and orange sighting buoys are placed approximately every 75 meters. Water temperatures in August are commonly in the mid to upper 70s; an official reading is posted the Friday before the event.
Bike routes run on well paved, low traffic roads and include hilly and technical sections as well as straightaways and scenic views. Olympic bike route elevation is listed at about 1300 feet and the sprint bike route at about 513 feet. Run courses are rolling, out-and-back routes on the road shoulder with little shade; the 10K route shows about 292 feet elevation and the 5K about 90 feet. Aid stations provide ice water and Gatorade about every mile.
