The Maverick Dark Castle Trail, Corfe Castle

The Maverick Dark Castle Trail is a night trail running event that starts at Corfe Castle in Corfe, Wareham, Dorset (BH20 5EZ). The course runs in the dark across heathland, woodland and village paths with views across Purbeck and distant lights of Poole Harbour. Corfe Castle is an early Norman ruin built in the reign of William the Conqueror.

There are three route choices:

  • Long: 15 km, +243 m elevation
  • Middle: 11 km, +225 m elevation
  • Short: 5 km, +120 m elevation

Routes include soft, muddy sections in November, tight single track, and some hard-packed or road sections. The Long and Middle routes continue along a ridge and pass Stone Hill Down and the area known as Blue Poole. The Long route has one outpost at about 7 km; the Middle and Short routes have no outpost. Outpost provisions are self-serve from water barrels and include snacks, gels and electrolyte drink; there are no prefilled cups at the outpost.

Practical details: toilets are only available in the start/finish area and the event car park is a 15–20 minute walk from the venue. Headphones are not permitted. Dogs are not allowed within the event venue. Participants are asked to bring a reusable cup or bottle for water; food and drink, event photography, a metal finishers medal, timed results and a bag drop area are provided.
