The Maverick Dark Castle Trail

The Maverick Dark Castle Trail is a nighttime trail running event held in the village of Corfe, Dorset. The event starts at the historic Corfe Castle, providing an opportunity to run through the ruins and surroundings of this Norman fortress. Participants navigate the routes in the darkness, passing through the village and across Corfe Common.

The courses offer a variety of terrain, including soft and muddy trails typical for November, mixed with some hard-packed sections and roads. Runners on the longer distances head toward Church Knowle and onto the ridge at Knowle Hill, where views extend across Purbeck and Poole Harbour. Sections of the route pass through tight, single-track woodland and open heath at Stone Hill Down and the Blue Poole, where local wildlife such as Sika deer may be seen.

Available distances include:

  • 15 km with 243 m elevation gain
  • 11 km with 225 m elevation gain
  • 5 km with 120 m elevation gain

The event operates with a plastic-free policy, and there are no pre-filled cups at the single aid station available for the longest route. Mandatory equipment includes a headtorch or chest torch, a phone, trail shoes, a raincoat, a long-sleeve top, a foil blanket, and a water bottle or pack. The venue includes a bag drop area, fire pits, and food and drink options. Please note that pets are not permitted at the event venue.
