The Loop Ultra at Camp Plas
The Loop Ultra is a 32 mile (about 50 km) trail running event held at Camp Plas, Plas Dolanog near Welshpool in the Cambrian Mountains. The route is fully marked and supported by back runners and rangers. Entry is capped at 100 runners plus family and friends, and there is a 14 hour cut off time.
The course follows trails, forest tracks and ancient paths and passes near Lake Vrynwy and sections of the Glyndŵr Way, with open views towards the Shropshire Hills and southern Snowdonia. Wildlife such as red kites is commonly observed along the route.
The event is canicross friendly; dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run and kept on the lead at all times, with owners fully responsible for their animals. Checkpoints are well stocked and cater for a range of dietary requirements including vegan options, offering snacks, drinks and electrolytes.
Weekend facilities at Camp Plas include camping, field bell tents and log cabins with toilets and showers, a BBQ and bar serving locally sourced food, live music in the barn, opportunities for paddle boarding, yoga and wild bathing, and limited fire pits. Parking is free for campers; a small fee applies for on-the-day parking.
Mandatory kit includes waterproof jacket and trousers, race vest or pack, suitable base layer, capacity to carry at least 1 litre of fluid, emergency food, map or GPX file, charged mobile phone and power pack, hat and gloves, trail footwear, basic first aid items, foil blanket, reusable cup, head torch and whistle with spare batteries.
