The Last Wolf

The Last Wolf is a unique distance event held in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, organized by Dirty Wolf Ultras. The race takes place on gravel trails featuring some elevation gains and losses. The course consists of a 3.1 mile (5K) loop that runners must complete repeatedly until only one participant remains.

The event follows a distinct format that differs from a traditional backyard ultra. Instead of a static hourly cutoff, the time limit for each loop changes in a cycling pattern. Participants begin with 40 minutes for the first loop, and the time limit increases by five-minute increments for subsequent laps (45, 50, 55, and 60 minutes). After a 60-minute lap, the clock resets to 40 minutes, and the cycle repeats. To be declared the winner, the final runner must complete a solo loop within the designated time limit.

Available distance formats and categories include:

  • Last Man Standing
  • 50K
  • 25K
  • 5K

A fully stocked aid station is available to participants, offering water, hydration drinks, sodas, and various snacks such as fruit, bacon, and pretzels. Participants are required to wear their bibs on the front of their clothing. The use of trekking poles is not permitted. The race occurs on private property, and strollers or dogs are not allowed on the course.

Course Information

The route follows a gravel trail that extends approximately one mile out before returning. While the trail surface is consistent, the course includes sections of ascent and descent. Medals are awarded upon the completion of the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
