The Kook Run
The Kook Run is an annual athletic event held in Encinitas, California, taking place on Super Bowl Sunday. The courses follow the scenic State Coast Highway 101, passing landmark locations such as the "Magic Carpet Ride" statue, commonly known as the Cardiff Kook. The event serves a wide range of participants, including competitive athletes, recreational joggers, and walkers.
The event features several different race distances and categories:
- 10 km Pro/Elite race with a prize purse for world-class and local runners.
- 10 km People's race for runners and walkers of all abilities.
- 5 km People's race along the coastal route.
- Junior Kook Run for children ages 3-12, held on the Saturday before the main event.
A primary highlight of the event is the themed costume contest. Participants can compete for prizes in individual or group categories. On the Saturday prior to the main races, a pre-race venue at the Ecke YMCA hosts packet pickup, registration, and a vendor expo with various activities.
The festivities conclude at Moonlight Plaza with a post-race festival. This gathering includes live music, a beer garden, and breakfast food options. The event is supported by local community organizations, including the San Diego Track Club and Cardiff 101 Main Street. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
