The Jake Porter Duathlon
The Jake Porter Duathlon is an annual multi-sport event hosted by the Shetland Triathlon Club in Cunningsburgh. This season opener serves as a memorial event and raises funds for the charity Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). The competition is open to individuals and teams, with relay options available for groups of two or three people.
The event follows a run-bike-run format:
- 3.4 km run
- 17 km bike
- 3.4 km run
The first 3.4 km leg consists of a run on roads and paths, beginning and ending at Cunningsburgh Hall. This is followed by a 17 km bike leg that takes participants southbound past Sandwick before returning to the hall. The event concludes with a second 3.4 km loop on the initial run route.
The competition is open to participants aged 15 and over. Those aged 17 and under require parental consent to participate. Participants must use a roadworthy bicycle and are required to wear a helmet during the cycling portion of the event. Registration takes place at the venue to collect race numbers and bike rack assignments, followed by a mandatory race briefing for all competitors.
Post-event activities include a prizegiving ceremony and refreshments at Cunningsburgh Hall, with proceeds from the catering supporting Ability Shetland. The entry fee for the event also includes participation in a fundraising prize draw. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
