Event Overview
The Hourglass - Phoenix is a multi-discipline endurance event held at Freestone Park in Gilbert, Arizona. The competition follows a unique format where participants must complete specific work within a shrinking time window. The first round begins with a 30-minute time cap, and for every subsequent round, the time limit decreases by one minute. Participants who finish within the cap earn a start in the next round, while those who miss the cutoff conclude their event. The competition continues until only one person remains in each category.
Course and Format
The event takes place on fast, runnable terrain with open exposure to the sun. Participants choose one of four distinct categories, each with its own loop or requirements:
- Hourglass Run: A 2-mile loop.
- Hourglass Ruck: A 1-mile loop with a weighted pack (35 lb for men, 20 lb for women).
- Hourglass Hybrid Athlete: A 2-mile run plus 10 burpees per round.
- Hourglass Loaded Carry: An 800m sandbag carry (60 lb for men, 45 lb for women).
Recovery time consists of whatever duration remains on the clock after a participant completes their loop and before the next round starts.
Participation and Awards
The event emphasizes a community atmosphere where participants who have been eliminated are encouraged to remain and support those still competing. The top finisher in each of the four categories receives an award. Additionally, the top five finishers in each category earn an invitation to a championship event held in Anchorage, Alaska. Participants are responsible for providing their own weighted packs for the ruck event and should prepare for outdoor conditions with sun protection and electrolytes.
