The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra takes place on 8th July 2026 and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The event is a point to point ultramarathon of approximately 27 miles with 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent. Peak height reaches about 1,988 ft and the course record is 3:59:00.
The route begins with a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon to the source of the Severn. The mountain has areas of concealed bog and runners are advised to keep to designated routes. A race marshal is stationed at the river source before competitors continue along the Severn path and return to Rhyd y benwch, which serves as CP1. The overall course drops around 1,600 ft from the source at this stage and passes through undeveloped upland scenery.
The race is point to point and competitors must arrange their own travel to the start and from the finish at Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws, Newtown SY17 5SB. GPX files and maps are provided and use of GPX navigation is recommended.
There are two checkpoints offering food options; entrants may select vegan or gluten free choices at registration. The event is cup free so competitors must bring a reusable cup. Entry is £80 non refundable and competitors may defer for a fee within the organiser's stated deadline. Entrants must be 20 years or over and carry mandatory kit including a backpack, OS Map 150 or downloaded map, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone and a basic first aid kit. All finishers receive a bespoke finishers medal and an MTC head visor. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
