The MTC Hafren Ultra

The MTC Hafren Ultra takes place on 8 July 2026 and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The race is a point-to-point event with a listed distance of 27 miles, total ascent of 872 m and total descent of 1,069 m. This is the 10th edition; the course record is 3:59:00. Entry is charged at £80 and all payments are non-refundable. Entrants must be at least 20 years old.

Course and logistics

The route begins at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area (Llanidloes SY18 6PT), proceeds to the source of the River Severn via a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon, and then follows the Severn Path toward the finish at Mid Wales Arts Centre, Maesmawr, Caersws, Newtown SY17 5SB. A marshal is stationed at the river source and there are two official checkpoints, including CP1 at the Rhyd-y-benwch area and CP2 near a bridge in Llanidloes (SY18 6PH). Checkpoint food options include vegan and gluten free selections if chosen at registration; competitors may supply and label their own bags for checkpoint use.

Navigation files (GPX) are provided and recommended due to possible overgrowth of the Severn Path. Competitors must maintain a minimum average pace of 4.0 miles per hour or risk removal from the race. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, Ordnance Survey Map 150, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and a basic first aid kit. The event is cup-free; participants should bring a reusable cup and make their own travel arrangements to start and from the finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
