The MTC Hafren Ultra
The MTC Hafren Ultra is a point-to-point ultra that forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge and finishes at the Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws. The route includes a near four mile mountain trek up Plynlimon to the source of the River Severn, an area noted for concealed bogs and the need to keep to designated routes. A race marshal monitors arrival at the source before competitors continue along the Severn river path. The course features an altitude drop of about 1,600 ft and passes through largely unchanged countryside.
There are two checkpoint stations on course. Checkpoint food and drink are provided with options for Vegan and Gluten Free; entrants may also supply labelled food bags for specific checkpoints. Events are cup-free so competitors should bring a reusable cup.
Navigation is the competitor’s responsibility: the route may be overgrown and is largely unsigned, and organisers recommend using provided GPX files. Participants must maintain an average of 4.0 miles per hour or face removal from the race under the event time restrictions. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, Ordnance Survey Map 150, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit.
Entry is non-refundable; standard solo entry is £80. All finishers receive a bespoke Hafren Ultra medal and a MTC head visor; first male and female finishers receive bespoke trophies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
