Event overview
The MTC Hafren Ultra takes place on 8th July 2026 and forms Day 1 of the MTC Severn Challenge. The race is a point-to-point ultra over 27 miles with 872 m of ascent and 1,069 m of descent. The route starts at Rhyd-y-benwch picnic area, goes up Plynlimon to the source of the River Severn, then follows the river path back to finish at the Mid Wales Arts Centre in Caersws. The route includes a near four mile mountain trek across moorland and boggy ground and features an altitude drop of about 1,600 ft from the source.
Logistics and rules
Entry is a standard solo fee of £80.00 and payments are non-refundable. The race has two checkpoint stations. Checkpoint food options can be selected as Vegan or Gluten Free at registration; examples of checkpoint items include malt loaf, jam and peanut butter sandwiches, cake, nuts, fruit, squash, cola and water. Competitors may supply labelled personal food bags if other dietary needs apply. All events are cup-free and participants should bring a reusable cup.
Competitors must meet a minimum average speed of 4.0 miles per hour; falling below this threshold may result in removal from the race. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, Ordnance Survey Map 150 (downloadable maps accepted), compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone and basic first aid kit.
