The Feral Hog Mountain Run
The Feral Hog Mountain Run is an off-road, "Mountain Classic" style trail race held at Matney Knob in Norfork, Arkansas, organized by Syllamo Events. The course centers on Matney Knob, a 1,178 foot summit on the Ozark Highlands Trail - Sylamore Section, and combines a sustained climb with a technical descent.
The advertised distance is about 7.5 miles with approximately 1,800 feet of elevation gain and a 4 hour time limit. From the start there is roughly 3/4 mile of doubletrack climb before the route follows singletrack on the Ozark Highlands Trail back to the initial doubletrack. Runners should expect a variety of trail surfaces, including smooth pine-needle sections and unmaintained game trail with roots, rocks, and boulders. There are zero miles of pavement on the course.
Race rules require staying on the marked trail, which will use yellow flagging, and observing common trail etiquette; earbuds are discouraged. Alcohol is not allowed within park boundaries and dogs are not permitted on the race course. The event is donation based with suggested entry options of $0, $25, $50, or $75, and entries are capped at 75. Proceeds support local trail building and maintenance projects around Norfork. Organizers plan custom finisher awards and a postrace breakfast at the Misty Mornings pavilion. Average weather for the date is cited as a high near 66°F and a low near 36°F.
