About the race
Matney Knob Mountain Run takes place on Matney Knob in Norfork, Arkansas, on terrain that bookends the Ozark Highlands Trail - Sylamore Section. Matney Knob rises to 1,178 feet and the event follows a "Mountain Classic" format, featuring a sustained climb followed by a technical descent. The course is officially recognized as a Classic Mountain or Classic Up-and-Down race by the World Mountain Running Association.
The course measures about ~7.5 miles with roughly 1,800 feet of elevation gain and a four hour time limit. From the start there is about 3/4 mile of doubletrack climb before runners enter singletrack on the Ozark Highlands Trail and return to the original doubletrack. Expect a mix of smooth pine-needle sections and unmaintained game trail, with roots, rocks, and boulders throughout. There are zero miles of pavement.
The event is donation based; proceeds support local trail projects including loop and natural space trails and preliminary mountain bike loop planning with the US Forest Service. Entry is capped at 75. Suggested donation options listed are $0, $25, $50, and $75. Race shirts are available by preorder for $15; extras may be limited. Custom finisher awards will use local materials and overall awards will be given in Overall, Master’s, and Grand Master’s categories.
The start and finish area is at the Misty Mornings Pavilion, which offers cabins, car camping, and primitive camping. Parking is not available at the Matney Camp Trailhead; family or crew may park at the Matney Knob Trailhead and walk a short distance to the trail turn. The race is not a closed course, and runners may encounter other hikers. Course marking uses yellow flagging. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
