Spirit of Syllamo and The Quirky Turkey
Spirit of Syllamo and The Quirky Turkey are ultra endurance trail races held in the Sylamore Ranger District of the Ozark St. Francis National Forest. The events include multiple distance options:
- 100 Miles, Spirit of Syllamo
- 38 Miles, Quirky Turkey
The 100 Mile route includes about 31 miles of the Ozark Highlands Trail and sections of the North Sylamore Creek Trail. The 38 Mile route includes about 18 miles of the Ozark Highlands Trail. Runners should expect a high amount of climbing; devices commonly read about 175 feet of gain per mile while the course can feel like 200+ feet per mile. The race starts near 390 feet above sea level and reaches roughly 1,500 feet at the highest point.
Terrain is rugged, rocky, steep, and densely forested with highly variable single and double track. There are dozens of creek crossings; most can be crossed dry in normal conditions. The 100 Mile route has three larger crossings that may be wet in higher water and the 38 Mile route has one crossing that can hold water after rain.
Race logistics center on Misty Mornings Arkansas Cabins and RV Sites in Norfork, AR, with onsite camping and additional local lodging options. Packet pickup is available at Norfork Adventure Supply on the Friday before the race and on race morning; drop bags and bibs are distributed on race morning. The 100 Mile distance has specific crewing and pacing provisions; a separate crew packet is provided.
Aid stations offer electrolyte mixes, ginger ale, Coca-Cola, water, solid foods, and cooked warm items; NSAIDs are not supplied. Cutoffs are listed as 12.5 hours for the 38 Mile and 34 hours for the 100 Mile. Finishers receive engraved awards; 100 Mile finishers also receive a belt buckle.
