Spirit of Syllamo - Norfork, Arkansas
Spirit of Syllamo and the Quirky Turkey are ultra endurance trail races held in the Sylamore Ranger District of the Ozark St. Francis National Forest near Norfork, Arkansas. Organizers describe the event as a tough race with multiple distance options.
Distances include:
- 100 Mile
- 38 Mile
- 35 Mile loop
The routes use long sections of the Ozark Highlands Trail and parts of the North Sylamore Creek Trail. Terrain is rugged, rocky, steep, and densely forested with highly varied single and double track. Runners should expect many creek crossings; most are shallow but the 100 mile contains three larger crossings and the 38 mile may have one larger crossing after recent rain. Typical elevation gain averages 175 feet per mile on devices and the course can feel like 200 or more feet per mile. The course starts near 390 feet above sea level and reaches about 1,500 feet at its highest point.
Course marking uses ribbons tied to tree branches and prominent arrows or ground signs at difficult turns. Organizers recommend using GPX for navigation. Aid stations provide hydration, electrolyte mix, soda, water, solid and cooked foods, and basic first aid; NSAIDs and other pain relievers are not supplied. Small carry on drop bags are allowed and will be returned to the start finish. Crewing is permitted for 100 mile runners with a separate crew packet. Prizes include a belt buckle and plaque for 100 mile finishers and a laser engraved coaster for 38 mile finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
