The Drop - Kendal is a navigational return race with two distance options:
- 15-mile (measured as the crow flies)
- 10-mile (measured as the crow flies)
Entries can be solo or in a team. The next scheduled event date is 06/12/2025. Event headquarters is at Podda & Wren Coffee Roasters, 4 Elephant Yard, Kendal, LA9 4QQ. Parking is available in the town centre; the nearest railway station is a 10 minute walk from the event HQ and the bus station is 5 minutes away.
Format, rules and tracking
At registration participants hand over electronic devices, watches and navigational aids and receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag. Competitors board a bus, wear a blackout blindfold or an alternative blackout safety goggle if needed, and are driven to an undisclosed drop-off location. From that point participants must find their way back to the event centre without maps, GPS, compass or external help. Distances are measured as the crow flies and the actual route may be longer.
Rules include no unauthorised maps, no shortcuts and disqualification for breaking the emergency bag seal. Live GPS tracking is offered as an optional, paid feature; trackers are accurate to within 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings and black spots. Trackers must be returned after the event or a £175 replacement fee will apply. Organisers have additional safety features not available to participants.
