Sedbergh Hills Fell Race
The Sedbergh Hills Fell Race covers 22.5 km / 14 miles with approximately 1830 m / 6004 ft of ascent across the Howgill Fells. The event is based at People's Hall, Howgill Lane, Sedbergh, and is the 47th edition of the race. It is run under FRA rules as a category AL fell race.
The route crosses open, grassy fell with steep climbs and steep descents and includes checkpoints on Arant Haw, Castley Knott, Black Force, Bowderdale, The Calf and Winder. Navigation skills are essential; some sections are pathless and can be disorientating in poor visibility. Water on route is limited. GPS use is forbidden in line with FRA rules.
Full kit is required and a kit check is carried out at registration before the dibber is issued; random kit checks may be carried out at the finish. Cutoffs are strictly enforced: Arant Haw 40 minutes; Castley Knott 1 hour 10 minutes; Black Force 1 hour 50 minutes; Bowderdale 2 hours 50 minutes; Finish 5 hours 00 minutes.
Additional event details: entry minimum age 18, entry limit 450 with no entry on the day, parking only at Sedbergh School (Lupton Fields). A winners trophy is presented each year and a £100 prize is available for breaking the male or female course record. Dogs are not permitted on the event field.
