The Drop - Birmingham
The Drop is a navigation challenge based at Blackroot Bistro, Sutton Park, Blackroot Gate, Sutton Coldfield, B74 2YU. Participants are taken to an undisclosed location and must find their way back to the event centre without route guidance.
Registration requires participants to hand over electronic devices, watches and navigational aids. In exchange they receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must be carried intact for the duration of the event.
Deployment is by bus with blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives. Participants do not know their location or orientation when they are dropped. Timing starts when blindfolds are removed and each person is responsible for their return on foot.
Rules include no GPS, no unauthorised maps, on-foot travel only, and disqualification if the emergency bag seal is broken. Blindfolds may be substituted with blackout safety goggles if required. Distances are measured as the crow flies; actual travel distance will usually be longer.
Available options:
- 10 miles core Drop, undisclosed location, no maps or GPS.
- 15 miles original version, longer distance and extended decision making.
- 6 miles open only to non-locals; intended for visitors and unfamiliar participants.
Live GPS trackers are offered optionally for safety and viewing. Trackers must be returned after the event or a £175 replacement fee applies. Trackers can be affected by buildings and signal black spots. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
